Rad, Dude, Wicket!

Hehehehe

These are just a few words I kinda use on my daily email to my mother,

I just received a mail from her asking the following:

Wat beteken RAD???

Now to me that is funny!

How many times have I emailed, sms or spoken to mom and used this word and she did not know what I meant!

It made me think…

South Africans really do mix our languages very deliciously!

I love it! (below a few mixes, not really used as some of us have brains)

“I laaik (like) jou kwaai cherry”

"I like you stukkend, my bokkie!"

“Hoezit my ou”

“Ek is nou nicely g*tvol vir jou sh*t”

“Ja-Nee”

“Nee, baas ek het geen clue nie”

“Draai links by die T-Junction, ry oor 4-way Stop, regs by robots en dan waar pavement begin my huis is thru daai gates”

Well those are a few confusion sayings, not only to me but to half the English population of South Africa with all the mixing of 2 to 12 languages in one sentence.

  1. Hey, accidently got to your blog and my eye fell on the frequent use of Dutch words. So decided to read a little more. I'm Dutch (but living at the moment in Estonia) and I always joked that I speak a little Afrikaans (17th century contemporary Dutch mixed with Malay and English). Heb er wel eens over nagedacht om Afrikaans te leren, maar helaas ben ik er nog niet aan toe gekomen. Languages are a hobby of me.
But anyway, useless info, just wanted to leave a comment on a comment-deprived blog.

    Hou je taai.
